Types of Cement in India
1. Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC)
Grades: 33, 43, and 53
Application: General construction, such as residential buildings, bridges, pavements, etc.
Features: The most widely used type of cement. The numbers (33, 43, 53) refer to the compressive strength of the cement after 28 days.
2. Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC)
Application: Dams, marine structures, sewage works, etc.
Features: Contains pozzolanic materials that enhance durability. It offers better resistance to aggressive environmental conditions.
3. Rapid Hardening Cement
Application: Road repairs, pre-fabricated concrete construction, and in cold weather concreting.
Features: Gains strength quicker than OPC, making it ideal for projects requiring early completion.
4. Sulphate Resisting Cement
Application: Structures exposed to high levels of sulphates, such as in chemical plants, sewage treatment works, etc.
Features: Resists sulphate attacks, reducing the risk of damage from sulphate-rich environments.
5. Quick Setting Cement
Application: Underwater construction, repair works, and places with low water presence.
Features: Sets faster than OPC, allowing construction in water-logged areas.
6. Low Heat Cement
Application: Large-scale concrete works like dams, where heat generated by hydration could be a concern.
Features: Produces less heat during hydration, reducing the risk of thermal cracking in large concrete structures.
7. Portland Slag Cement (PSC)
Application: Marine structures, bridges, buildings near coastal areas, etc.
Features: Contains blast furnace slag, which improves durability, especially in structures exposed to chloride and sulphate.
8. White Cement
Application: Decorative works, precast curtain walls, terrazzo flooring, etc.
Features: It is similar to OPC but with a pure white color. It is used for aesthetic purposes.
9. Hydrophobic Cement
Application: Construction in damp and water-logged areas.
Features: Contains admixtures that prevent water absorption, improving its shelf life.
10. Colored Cement
Application: Decorative purposes, aesthetic finishes.
Features: It is OPC with pigments added to provide different colors.
