Procedure (as per IS:2720 Part 29)

  • Drive core cutter into soil; trim flush and weigh cutter + wet soil (Ws).
  • Take representative wet sample (W₂ = 300 g) for moisture; oven-dry to get W₁.
  • Bulk density Yb = (wet soil mass) / Vc (g/cm³).
  • Water content W% = (W₂ − W₁) × 100 / W₁.
  • Dry density Yd = 100 × Yb / (100 + W).
  • Compare Yd with MDD to compute % compaction and moisture deviation from OMC.
